"It's not that I'm unhappy or ungrateful they came, even if I wasn't expecting them."

Cara was not avoiding either of her guests.

"Or that they walked in on us, we'd barely even gotten started."

Because that would imply there was a problem with Richard or Kahlan being here.

"...rum is not the solution to all of life's problems."

People sneaked out of their rooms to find a random squirrel to talk at about things which most definitely weren't problems with all the time. Right?

After Kahlan and Richard had decided it was best to divide and conquer, there were really only two places to look for Cara. Surprise surprise at finding the Mord'Sith in the second place she had thought to look.

"I've always thought some solutions came just through sharing your troubles with a friendly ear," Kahlan said, a breeze filtering through the trees and blowing her skirts and glorious hair in a manner that could almost be deemed magical.

Cara only let herself be distracted by Kahlan's hair for a few moments before crossing her arms defensively. "You say that like I have troubles to share." Never mind she was doing exactly that with a pair fuzzy ears.

She cast a glance at the squirrel after it gave a small, chittery sigh. "Yes, that's Kahlan."

She joined Cara and smiled in amusement at Cara's relationship with the squirrel. "No wonder the squirrels were so helpful when we were seeking your room."

"They only like me because I let them have my rum," Cara told her, before addressing the squirrel again. "Tell whoever it was they're not getting any next time."

"Now that's no way to treat your friends," Kahlan chided with a smirk. "You should thank them. We might never have met Clark if the directions had been poor."

"I don't see how that would have been a problem," Cara replied, far too quickly.

Kahlan raised an eyebrow at that. "You can't fool me, Cara. I saw you with him, don't be embarrassed."

Cara did her best to ignore the eyebrow. "Why would I be embarrassed? It's hardly the first time you and Richard have had bad timing."

"I'm glad to hear you aren't embarrassed," Kahlan decided. "Richard and I were so pleased to find you opening your heart to another again." Maybe their guess was wrong, but this was a good way to find out.

Look at the way Cara's back completely didn't stiffen and she completely didn't avoid meeting Kahlan's eyes. "There's a difference your bed and your heart."

"And you're going to tell me that one remains closed?" Kahlan prodded gently.

"Well, I don't have to now." Such a good thing Confessors couldn't read Mord'Sith.

It didn't take a Confessor's power to know Cara was lying. "So why did you choose him?" Couldn't possibly be that Cara had a type.

Only insofar as referring to types in plural would be more accurate. "Why wouldn't I?" Cara asked on slightly more solid footing now. "He was pleasant and willing."

Only reasons. Yup.

"Just that?" Yeah, Kahlan had seen him. "I believe that boy thinks a little more of you than just pleasant and willing, Cara."

"What do you want me to say?" Cara snapped defensively, why did Kahlan always have to nag about things like this? "And maybe he shouldn't."

They didn't call her the Mother Confessor for no reason. "Don't sell yourself short," she said carefully. "You can't expect not to change in all your time away from D'Hara."

"This isn't about me, he's just going to get hurt when he realises he's set his expectations too high."

See how much she didn't care about Clark's feelings! Because she didn't.

"So what are his expectations?" Kahlan wondered. She suspected that despite hearing that Cara talked to this boy, there wasn't a lot of sharing going on.

That would have required Cara talking about feelings, or acknowledging any sort of relationship was going on.

But Kahlan could probably guess that from the rather helpless shrug.

Poking and nagging a Mord'Sith was probably not something a lot of people survived, and still Kahlan continued. "Uh huh, so what makes you so certain you're going to hurt him?"

"I'm Mord'Sith, it's what I'm good at," she said, then paused. "And who said I was worried about hurting him?"

It might have helped more to say that first, Cara.

"I believe that was you, Cara," Kahlan pointed out.

Denial only got a girl so far.

"You can deny it, but you cannot fool me." Don't make her singsong, Cara.

Kahlan had met Cara, right? "Do I have to remind you, that you can't read a Mord'Sith."

Because that line had worked so well the last time she tried it.

The look on Kahlan's face said as much. "Fine, no more questions about your boy. Who you like."

"I do not." Sometimes Cara was a terrible liar, but Kahlan knew this already.

"He is cute," she said, turning so Cara wouldn't see her grin.

Like Cara actually needed to see Kahlan smile, she could hear it in her voice. "I hadn't noticed."

Now she was just sulking.
