Somewhere in The Midlands, on what was possibly a Friday.
"I'm not going." Arms crossed, feet planted firmly on the ground, Cara glared at Richard. "Wherever you're planning on sending me, I won't go." And if you force me to, you can't make me stay there, the glare added.
"Cara, we don't know that we'll have to do that," Richard said, his tone soothing, like he was talking to a skittish horse. Note that he didn't deny that he was considering sending her away. "Zedd and Kahlan will be back soon, and it's possible they found a way to lift the curse."
"And if they didn't? If there isn't a way to fix this?" Cara gestured to her now even shorter self. "What then Richard? You can't palm me off on Kahlan's sister like you did Ren."
Not even Richard was naive enough to consider that a workable option. "We'll figure something out, find somewhere where you'll-"
She cut him off before he could finish. "I don't need to be sent away. I can still protect you, even like this."
"You're a child!" And as far as Richard was concerned, that was is. You didn't use teenagers to do your fighting, even ones who were technically older than you.
"Only physically." Her voice cracked on last syllable. "It's my duty to protect the Lord Rahl."
Richard opened his mouth to deliver the dirty, low blow that it was Cara's duty to obey the Lord Rahl when he was interrupted by the sound of hoof-beats.
"Kahlan!" Cara all but pulled Kahlan down off the horse. "You found a cure. Zedd can fix this, right?" And then they could all forget Richard's incredibly idiotic idea of sending her away, and go back to rescuing random farm animals.
Kahlan winced visibly and shook her head. "I'm sorry, Cara. But, you know, maybe this could be a good thing." The 'somehow' went unsaid.
"How is leaving Richard unprotected a good thing? You know he'll get himself killed within a week. Two at most."
Richard wanted to protest that he was quite capable of not getting killed on his own, but Kahlan's expression suggested she might have agreed with Cara on that front.
"We didn't find a way to break the curse, but we did find a possible solution." Zedd pulled an oddly glossy piece of parchment from his travel bag. "Even if Richard will have to find a way to survive a few weeks on his own."
