Somewhere in the Midlands, Saturday Morning
Apart from a few days spent in towns, they were mostly back in the wilderness again, and while they weren't making as much progress (or going in the right direction) as Cara would have liked... she didn't hate it, not least because it meant not having to deal with people who weren't Richard, Kahlan, or Zedd.
Though there was the downside of having to stand double (or triple) watches because certain people needed to go for 'walks' (and honestly, who did they think they were fooling at this point), and the chill beginning to creep into the air at night. Both of which were reasons why when she realised she was waking up curled around a soft warm body, which if it wasn't the right warm body still had a different kind of rightness to it, she'd just curled in tighter without opening her eyes.
"Cara."
Not that she was apparently going to get a moment's peace, apparently. But since Richard hadn't bothered getting back from his and Kahlan's 'walk' in time to stand his watch last night, Cara felt completely justified in ignoring him for now and not moving one single inch.
"Cara." Richard's voice was oddly strangled. "You need to wake up right now."
"What's so important?" Cara asked, before finally deigning to open her eyes, only to be greeted by a furry visage. "Oh."
When Cara looked away from the massive wolf, she could see Richard already had the Sword of Truth drawn. "Just try and sidle away without startling it, then we should be able to scare it away."
"I'm a he, not an it," the wolf informed Richard archly, before dragging his tongue over Cara's face as she sat up.
Cara probably would have appreciated the look on Richard's face more if she didn't have wolf slobber all over hers or a cold nose pressed in against her neck. "Yes, Richard, let's not startle the talking wolf."
"I have a name too," the wolf added in a tone that would have been quite scathing if he also hadn't currently been on his back, tail wagging, in a wordless and shameless bid for belly rubs from Cara.. "It's Vieno."
"...why is there a talking wolf? ...why are you patting the talking wolf?"
"Because I'm adorable, obviously." Vieno replied, one hind paw frantically scratching at the air as Cara's fingers found that one spot. "If you want an explanation for the other part you should probably wake the others first, though. So I don't have to repeat myself."
